I had a moto guzzi griso for about a year a few years ago, it was a much more difficult bike to ride than a Harley Davidson. Got it for about $1000 less than this but used.

I sold it for the same that I bought it for though which was nice.

Try to match type, but I was trying to prevent people from posting fantasy bikes like confederates. Like the 6-15k range to embarass Harleys that go up to 18-20 Almost all of the bikes I want are sub 12 k because I won’t touch litre bikes.

Seriously, the more I look at bikes the more I am amazed how inexpensive the really nice ones are compared to cars.

I’ve never owned a Harley or been a fanboy, but I don’t quite get the hate for them either. Yeah, they’re heavy, don’t turn or stop great, and expensive to boot. That said, out of almost all the other bikes here you can look like an adult riding one, rather than a squid or an overgrown kid on a dirtbike, and the torque figures are nice and juicy which is great for everyday driving. If you buy used price isn’t as much a concern, and there are always mods to address various issues. I’ve actually been considering buying a used dyna in a couple years, test drives of a few other options pending.

HD is the only brand I’d never shop. There’s simply nothing the brand offers I couldn’t get elsewhere nor is there anything about the brand that warrants consideration...especially for the price of admission.

If not for the need to fit in by certain riders HD would have died years ago. Somehow they thought that sales boom in the late 90's/ early 00's was sustainable.

I think complacency and strict adherence to tradition has both saved HD, and doomed them. Nothing about the brand is exciting to me as a consumer, considering alternatives. Considering motorcycles are rarely purchases of need, want and desire are the whole brand. It is a difficult line to walk.

I don’t think HD is going out of business, but they will probably need to dramatically scale back operations.

Agreed. But at the same time, it is hand assembled and customized and you get “fitted” to it like a fine suit. It might only be a 250, but I can think of no other motorcycle that makes you look more distinguished and unique. It’s also super easy and really comfy to ride at 40-45mph. It’s a bit of a bargain at 8k or so. I’m sure for an extra grand or so they can find a bigger motor.

That ones’ a post-war bike, but aside from the tank design essentially unchanged from the earliest ones in the twenties. They’re fast, smooth, light, well-balanced, simply made, and historically significant. They used to compete in the Isle of Man.

They’re passive water-cooled (thermosiphon) two-stroke with an oil pump, and people still make the parts for them, even.

Funny thing is I was never a Harley guy until my old Yamaha started breaking down a lot and somehow my Dad (who owns a CB900) convinced me to buy a Sportster. I’ve always been more into sportier bikes, and cafe racers, (then there was the whole American Chopper phase before I could actually ride). Buying and riding that Sporster changed how I viewed motorcycles completely. It wasn’t fast, it didn’t handle great (although it was still better than my XJ), and it was heavy, under powered, etc. etc. etc. but I had more fun with that bike than any I’ve had before or since. Living in eastern South Dakota all there is to do around here is cruise, and a Harley is amazing at that so I started to see the appeal. Also as you grow older your tastes change and evolve and I started really getting into the older style bobbers because IMO they look awesome, and are great at cruising, which is the vast majority of the riding I do. I still hate the image that most Harley riders are associated with, but I’ve learned to ignore it and do my own thing, and I’ve met a few Harley riders who defy the stereotype which helps.

I still wouldn’t consider myself a Harley guy. Apart from the Lowrider S, and a couple of special model Sporsters the Street Bob is really the only Harley that I like, the rest of their lineup does nothing for me. I’m still a lover of all things two wheeled, and there’s a lot of non Harley’s that I’d love to have. I’m currently on a Yamaha Warrior 1700, which I love and plan to ride for a long time, but (prepare yourself for a crappy cliche) it doesn’t really speak to my soul.

The way I look at it is, I would never need anything faster, more agile, more fuel efficient, more comfortable, or probably even more reliable for anything other than a cross-country tour - and as I’m not a Bike Guy, if I had to pick one bike to own, it might as well be one with a stupid amount of character.

Kinja'd!!! Pickup_man > thejustache
10/17/2017 at 16:42

Kinja'd!!!1

I’ve never been much of a fanboy either, but I had a Sporster for a while and that changed a lot of my opinions on Harley. They’re exactly what people say they are, slow-ish, heavy, don’t handle well (though they aren’t nearly as bad as people make them out to be), but they’re amazing on long back roads and gentle curves. If you can get past the mindset of needing the fastest, lightest, nimblest bike possible and want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride, a Harley is a great choice (there’s plenty of other bikes that are as well). Give the Dyna a shot, I’ve ridden a few a liked them a lot, but due to wanting to save a little money I ended up on a Yamaha Warrior once I outgrew the Sportster.

Harley’s are very polarizing bikes, you either love them, or hate them. I ended up on one and discovered that I actually loved them, after having disliked them for a very long time. It seems that most people who spend some real time on a Harley riding them they way they were intended end up feeling the same way.

What other bikes are you looking at?

Here’s a 1913 Zenith-JAP Gradua that sold for $26,545 in 2010, less than the top of the Harley line. Only 6 horsepower, and it has a CVT, but it’s a manual CVT, and the bike has variable wheelbase (to maintain belt tension).

Kinja'd!!!

This is closer to the bottom end of Harley’s price range, and is completely different in role, but fuck it, have a 1948 Salsbury Imperial Rocket for $9850, because it’s a design that I’m in love with.:

Kinja'd!!!

Can almost certainly get a 1963 Honda Juno M85 well-within the price range, with an estimated sale price of $9200-13,000, so let’s go for one of those (and, hey, we’ve got another manual CVT, this one being a power split hydrostatic unit):

OK, let’s stop screwing around with scooters, and get something faster and more modern. A 2018 Zero SR ZF14.4, $16,495.
